My Father
When I began to prepare for emy first toastmaster speech ice breaker, I was thinking what I would talk about. I think it would be better talking about something or somebody I am familiar with. Then I thought of my father. He influenced me a lot. Not only because he is the person who gave me life, but also he is the role model in my life.
My father was a philosophy professor at a top university in China. During the Culture Revolution, he was in the center of the movement----Beijing University philosophy department, which is No. 1 university in China. Some of you may not know too much about the Culture Revolution. It took place from 1966 to 1976 began from Beijing Univerisity philosophy department by Chairman Mao. Mao gathered a bloc of radicals to aid him in his attack on the leadership of the Communist Party. Law-and-order was shattered. The whole country was in complete upheaval. Good-willed as the intent might seem, the Culture Revolution turned out to be a nightmare in the history of China's development. My a little memory of that was just parade and criticism and denunciation meeting everywhere all the time. Some 1.5 million people were killed during the Cultural Revolution, and millions of others suffered imprisonment, seizure of property, torture or general humiliation.
My father survived but his health was seriously damaged. You would expect him to complain a lot. On the contrary, I never heard him blame anyone who harmed him. Once he told me:” It is not easy to figure out what was right and what was wrong at that time. So there is no need to blame the people who followed the movement trying to do something right.” Then he mentioned not to follow some tide blindly without think it over. He has such a large heart and is such a tolerant person, showed me how forgive and importance of keeping your mind clear to see the world.
The second story is related to another disaster in China. That was Tangshan Earthquake in 1976, occurred in the early morning at 3:42 local time. It is believed to be the largest earthquake of 20th century by death toll. The number of the deaths were approximately 650,000, maybe more than that. The center of the earthquake was 84 miles far away from Beijing where I lived at that time. It was a very hot summer night. I was sunk in sleep. Suddenly I was woken up by my mother. It was so dark that I couldn’t see anything at all and there was a lot of noise outside. I heard footsteps running steps in a hurry and crying. Remember that was the end of the Culture Revolution. I was wondering: a big parade again? But it seemed everything was shaking. My mother’s voice was shaking too:” What? What! Earthquake? Earthquake!” She was so frightened and didn’t know what to do. Then I heard my father’s firm and calm voice,” Calm down and leave quickly!” My family left the building soon with only the clothes that covered our bodies. But you know many people were too hurried to put on clothes, and I could see the fear on their faces. I was just 8 years old at that time. I still remember very clearly the scene that night. I was so amazed my father could be so calm facing an emergency. Whenever I met some critical time , difficulty or emergency, my father’s words always appeared in my mind: calm down and face it.
Those were two of the things of my father. There are so many things I can remember about him. He was a person suffered a lot but did not become twisted and still kept optimistic view of the world. I hope I can be as good as him and be a role model of my daughter in her life, just as my father of me.
